And Speedball 2  ;)

Hmm.. Tough one to answer.... :)

I hope you mean gameplay wise (so please dont say manager all of you ;)

I'd have to say newest FIFA 09. Tried it out at a friends place. Completely diff. from SWOS, but perhaps the most realistic footy game there is on the market. There are so many amazing details in that game. Only thing is that I almost fall asleep playing it, but this probably because I compare it to much to SWOS. ;)

A few years ago i really liked PES, but it haven't evolved for 3-4 versions now which is really sad. In the old days, i use to play alot of International Superstar Soccer on my SNES (PES ealiest version). So i was a PES fan some time. That has ended... :(

J.League Winning Eleven 2008 Club Championships (which isn't quite PES, they JP and Euro versions have always been in fact two different takes on the same title and the latest releases diverged a lot gameplay-wise) for Playstation 2 NTSC-J. Much better than its PS3 counterpart (same producer, different development team) and such a great footie game overall.

I got FIFA 09 on PS3 as well but I dislike way too many aspects of its gameplay and uncannyvalleyc visuals to enjoy it.

Sierra Soccer for Amiga (1994) because of its totally strange ball physics. It's fun!

no doubt  "EMLYN HUGES INTERNATIONAL SOCCER".

Do not forget that it's  PES and FIFA grandpa!

em. hughes -> lothar matthaus -> fifa international soccer -> fifa 9x, winning eleven etc.

I have been a fan of the whole WE/ISSF/PES saga since the very first PSX WE game, though lately their latest versions are getting worse and worse. And no improvements at all. 1 player modes suck badly and they don't seem to care about improving them. I currently only play PES occasionally with some friends (that don't like swos obviously).

There are 2 more games that marked me back in the old days:
Match Day and Emlyn Hughes International Soccer

Both for ZX Spectrum, really enjoyed them by then. First Match Day (1 and then 2) then when I got Emlyn Hughes that became my favourite game ever. Spent endless hours with it, looked so real at that time :D
It was my favourite soccer game till... Sensi arrived.

PS : Socio please don't tell PES and FIFA have the same grandpa, that would mean they are cousins? They aren't. They are from completely different families :)
FIFA is a lame game.

Jikkyou Soccer Perfect Eleven/International Superstar Soccer (Super Famicom/SNES) - I've played this game probably just as much as Sensible Soccer back then, it was just that much better than the best next thing, EPOCH's J.League Excite Stage.

I remember playing Match Day II on C64, it was so f***ing slow ;D
Anyway, it was really not bad and I remember that I was cheering so much when I've scored such a great header goal hehehe

I've played Emlyn Hughes too (on Amiga), good graphics and it was not so bad but also not really good. I was never a fan of it cause I didn't like the gameplay. But it was good enough to pass the time till I've got Player Manager or Kick Off 2.

My very first game on Amiga was "Manchester United: The Official Computer Game" but it was not good.

Other "not so bad" soccer games I've played on Amiga were Manchester United Europe and Striker.

I have similar "football gaming career" like Daimaou. My first football game was Match Day and I loved it, we played this a lot with my brother. After trying Emlyn Hughes Iˇve never played Match Day again. I dont remember exactly but I think my first Amiga football was Lotthar Matthaus (=Rettee 2, European Champions and perhaps many other names) and I liked it a lot, its improved Emlyn. I played KickOff on one weekend, I was not able to score.  :) Then two Sensible Soccer games (1.1 and 1.2 ? I am not sure) and SWOS. It was my first original game I ever bought and it made me angry a bit, Marek PeMksa in Frankfurt, 7M (they just renamed Tony Yeboah) and Beguiristain in Barca,15 M (renamed Romario) are "stains" on SWOS reputation  :)
Also Man Utd-PLC is very good game, its duplicate of SWOS (and thats why it is good  ;)) and its not easy game.
I played first FIFA on Amiga and in my opinion its pure crap.
Super Sidekicks was the only arcade game I ever played and its not bad but its game for one afternoon or weekend.

Many spectrum games are much better than it's rushed C64 conversions, Match Day and Emlyn Hughes were 2 great examples of that. I didn't find a single football match I like on C64. And yeah Match Day was great for headers especially MD2 :)
Striker was also decent indeed, I played it several times too, mostly on PC. And Lotthar Matthaus too, a nice Emlyn Hughes improvement, problem is that when I got it I already had Sensi so didn't spend much time with it.

Penksa and Beguiristain are real players, do you mean they messed up when transferring Yeboah and Romario so that overrated players were left behind?

Oh, and FIFA has absolutely overtaken the only-getting-worse-since-WE6FE PES series by now but both games are relatively rubbish.

Apart from SWOS I guess I've spent most time with Goal! on the Amiga (the real sequel to KO2).

WE6FE

That was like what, 7 years ago? Trust me, the most recent iteration of the J-WE franchise is leaps and bounds better than anything currently available on the shelves, "next-gen" PES and FIFA included.

Along with SFIV it's the only game that prevents me from playing SWOS from time to time and I don't even get to play it with friends or online otherwise it'd be addicting.

also: your J.League database is like 3 or 4 years behind and oftentimes doesn't make much sense, btw, get it checked.

I always loved to play these soccer games:

ISS Deluxe (SNES), an awesome game! Really a big one for me.
Striker (DOS), great ball physics for shooting.
Kickoff 97 (Windows) --> You could do some really dirty tackles there...  ;D

Is that at me? My current update doesn't include the J.League, I didn't have time, so of course the data included is the original 96-97 (very old) with the wrong team names (for licensing reasons) etc.

If I had a J.League database it would be tidy and correct ;)

I'm gonna provide you some data then, been following J.League religiously since when I was a kid (by the way, the original 96/97 data Sensible Software relied upon wasn't completely correct either, aside from the mangled team names that were pretty much unavoidable due to copyright issues they ended up mixing up rosters from "94 upwards for a lot of teams, especially for the ones that belonged to the former 2nd division/JFL)!

FIFA is fawking amazing this year, I've been one of the biggest detractors of the series up until now but boy, did they get this right this time around.

Basically, it flows like Football Kingdom, controls better than Winning Eleven, plays like a sim, looks (finally) like a true "next-gen" title and most importantly it's unbelievably fun in multiplayer (whether it's online - there's no lag whatsoever btw - or in local with your friends). Presentation and players' characterization are still lacking but who cares honestly, the gameplay's so good I'll gladly turn a blind eye at that.

A def cop if you own a PS3 or a 360, I'm loving every minute of it.

I really like Super Soccer on the SNES, when it comes to two player matches. Against CPU it is to easy and to much in one way so it is fun, but it is not very eciting after two or three matches vs. cpu.
Maybe I should try Super Formation Soccer 94. It is based on Super Soccer but only released in Japan.

I like Super Soccer, too! Has a good (if not the best) penalty shootout mode of any 16bit-soccer game.

Not only the Penaltys are great. It is a little bit like Sensible Soccer (sure, not the perfection). You have to do evrything by yourself. There is only a shoot and a pass button. If you need a cross you have to train a lot to do it well, you can also make curled shoots and so on. I like it.

But I really like the old fashion football games. It is more the sports that is in the focus and not the ambiance (like in FIFA, Pro Evolution Soccer, Internation Superstar Soccer and so on). I like also Virtual Soccer, Microprose Soccer, Lothar Matthäus Soccer, Dino Dinis Soccer, Striker and Action Soccer.
When I was a kid, I was really a Soccergame addict. Love to play them all.

My football gaming history

- BBC Model B - nothing on there that I remember
- Amiga 600 - Sensible Soccer 1.1 and most of the subsequent SWOS titles, and as we all know, they're simply the best
                  - Striker, was fun, lots of goals
- SNES - Striker (again), had a great indoor version that my brother and I used to rack up scores of 23-22 in relatively short games.  Maybe they had indoor in the Amiga version, but I don't remember it
           - Kevin Keegan's Player Manager, a lot like Kick Off 2 (I think the game engine was based on that), was never a big fan
           - Super Soccer, like others said on here, surprisingly decent, and really enjoyed the penalty shoot outs
           - ISS (and deluxe version), this was really good stuff when it came out, I still enjoy from time to time now
- PC - tooled around with a few later 3D games on it, but nothing every really grasped me like Amiga SWOS
       - Championship Soccer - little indie game that you played as a single player on the pitch, and you had to control his career, actually wasn't bad
- Sony Ericsson D750i- Sensible Soccer, some crazy developer made a version for this phone, and it was surprisingly decent, considering the platform's limitations.  I think it led to the demise of the little thumstick on my phone.  I still have that phone somewhere, but I don't think it boots any more.  Better than anything I've tried on modern smart phones.

A lot of the rest of my time was spent on manager games.

In my opinion it must be Goal! (for the Amiga)...by far

Then probably Kick Off 2 (Amiga) and Player Manager (Amiga)

I want to use this service (http://www.1and1.com/game-server-hosting) for game server hosting, as I play Counter-Strike and Minecraft with co-op play, and it's super fun :)

In 2003 I've found a hidden gem inside a game mag called Total Soccer 2000. Two years later I found by chance the previous version Total Soccer. That time I've neverheard about Kick Off series or SWOS. Today I'm still playing Total Soccer 2000/Total Soccer - great gameplay/ball control, freedom in the pitch. Through these years I found many titles that worth a try and really matters to soccer video games history  for different platforms : SWOS-hard to master but funny /Football Glory - more playable than SWOS and funny/MUTD the Double  ( all for Amiga- FS AUE) ; Sensible Soccer 2006 PC - i didn't realize how addictive it was ; PES 1/2 (PS2)/TIF -This is Football/World Tour Soccer series (PS2- great footage and using top down camera. The close ups ruin the game); Active Soccer 2DX-playable but not responsive (Android); Super Arcade Football (PC)-a mix of KICK OFF and SWOS - with tiny players on large pitch but with a lot of potential (PC -Steam); FIFA titles  from 09 to 15 ( PS3 ).
But above all I prefer this lightweight called Total Soccer.

I love soccer games. my first love was Emlyn Hughes International Soccer. hours and hours of challenges with my cousins. then it was the turn of sensible soccer, the amiga version the best of all. now I've updated it to 2018/2019, I always play with it. among these I insert winning eleven 9 liveware evolution for pc, great gameplay ... currently I have updated it to 2017/2018 ... among the great ones certainly not missing PES6. here I open a separate chapter: my fellow countryman, Matteo Ucci, updates it every day. the NODRESS PATCH, the best in circulation, allows updates of the values of individual players via FOs published day by day, all updated to 2019/2020 (to be released in September). all the stadiums of the participating teams ... but the best thing is that the online community is very active: tournaments, championships and 2vs2 challenges. also for those who share their goals, participate in the weekly assignment of the puscas prize.
