Title: SWOS Win32 port teaser | #swos2020
Post by: Playaveli on 01 August 2018, 00:20:54
As posted in some other topics already, SWOS 2020 is the next project.
Right in time, zkz productions comes up with an incredible achievement... porting the whole game to modern Windows (win32).

As you might imagine, this opens the door for a whole lot of amazing possibilities.
To start off with, the focus right now is to port the original PC DOS game SWOS 96/97 to Win32. As you can see in the video, the start is very promising and the game works about 65%-70%.

Feel free to comment, post ideas, discuss, ask questions... or just celebrate what is the best news for SWOS hungry people since god knows when!  :P

Stay soci....  wait, no... Stay Sensible!! #swos2020

This is awesome, not only for making offline tournaments easier (not being dependent on old machines with 2 gameports anymore)!
How will P2P gaming work?

Nailed it, bomb! We could even use the neoware CA2 machines with XP on them instead of Win98. 2x USB port, using adapters... no more calibration.
As p2p has been added to the Dos version (latest SWOS++) already via IPX, for the port it will use straight UDP. From what Zlatko says, that's possible.

Really great news for all fans of the PC SWOS Version (and hopefully 100% compatible with every USB Game-Controller and Plug and Play).
Is it possible to run it on fullscreen?

It's also good news for the Amiga fans, given that game resolution can be modified at a later stage to match Amiga SWOS res. 336x272!

@HairFU: Right now, it's just windowed, but fullscreen shouldn't be a problem! You can count on plug&play USB!

Ok, but gameplay of this port is 100% of PC DOS SWOS feeling and not Amiga feeling (even if we set to amiga resolution), right?

Nope! Change of resolution (+ refresh rate) = Change of game physics. You played XBLA SWOS, didn't you?

Great news! Making SWOS even more immortal.

Just remember please to edit .exe file so matches take 3 minutes instead of 2:30 as in original dos version :)

Haha, yes! This bug which went unnoticed for 20 years until you came up with it has been fixed with the latest ++ extension for DOS already. Of course, it's in the port. 3mins will be real 3mins! ;)

I was able to do a test yesterday and what shall I say: Awesome achievement - biggest respect to Zlatko once again for this amazing work.

At the moment it is only possible to play in a small window but the general PC SWOS gameplay just feels right at first glance. However, it is
necessary to test this version full-screen on a crt monitor. One of the most important aspects for me is, that the game runs in the typical "PC
SWOS speed". But from what I tested with the smaller window, I have no doubts that this will be easily achieved.

As already mentioned above: SWOS 2020 will be an awesome improvement for offline tournaments as the calibration problems are still one of
the biggest issues with regards to the schedules.

SWOS without DOS! It is revolution :)

on the video works on the older Windows system, so I hope that it will work well on newer W10 systems.

When will be premiere?

Could this means for online games goodbye lags or desinch ?

Could this means for online games goodbye lags or desinch ?

Every online game will always suffer (more or less) from lag or desynch. People using wifi instead of LAN, or living in crowded areas where lines are overfrequented are common reasons for lags and desynch.
But, as internet speeds are getting faster and faster, the p2p client of ASWOS does a damn good job, already. You can play with 1-2 frames delay only, almost across central-Europe. If the port can replicate that, we're more than satisfied.

In other words: 100% Lag free online games will never exist, as long as light speed is the fastest possible speed.
If you want 100% lag free games, join Sensible Days! :)

What the port can do with UDP connections... time will show!

Will work on MAC! If not natively (maybe though), I will provide a fully working wine loader.
