Just got the RetroPort Atari USB Adapter:

21 $ + 3,95$ shipping. Took only 7 days from L.A.
Works like a charm with any old 9-Pin Joystick. No need to install drivers. Just plug and play....

Just tested it with MAME on Ubuntu - playing Moon Patrol.
