I ve heard a lot of old-schoolers complain about the prices of the über-cars in GT5.
And I know a lot of them have used the above-mentioned method.
If you miss the gold by a thousandth of a second, I d say the method is fair game .

I haven t done a lot of racing yet, bar the licence tests and the special events (playing around at the Nurburgring at the moment ).
