An article to express my opinion about some things we deal with everyday.

Hi everyone,

I m starting this topic to express my views and hear others views about some situations that are frequently encountered during online games but are not or can not be set by the rules. I wanted to start with a few things that I had to explain to my opponents several times, hoping I won t need to do that again using F11.

1- The same goal thing: I ve frequently heard from my opponents that I don t deserve the win coz I ve been scoring the same goal. As in real football, in SWOS both fantastic goals and cheap (or rubbish we can call if we re talking about the goal I m scoring) goals are counted as 1. And as in real basketball, harlem wouldn t stand a chance in NBA, no matter how beautifully they play. Also in my point of view, even though it says goalscoringsuperstarhero in our theme song, SWOS especially when played online, is not just about scoring rare/brilliant goals. I think it s more about passing, which involves the players ability to develop new tactics to have advantage over their opponents in ASL, in that sense SWOS is like chess, and real football is also like chess where they pay millions to coaches with good strategic abilities, where they also pay that to players with many good in game skills besides multiple standing headers:D So it may look like I keep scoring the same goal, but thing about it this way: If you re not able to stop it, I m either passing differently each time or the sad option, I m faster or more concentrated than you are. Otherwise you would be able to stop it after the first and there d be no complaints.
Note: By the way, I sometimes score nice goals too, even though they have never ben elected the best, refer to GOTM topic or type swos zafer on youtube.

2- The high ping thing and p2p/server debate: We have discussed this in some other topics too, but looks like an important point worth mentioning again. I have one of the best connections available on earth, luckily being on a 100mbit university LAN. But unfortunately I have it far far away, in New Brunswick campus of Rutgers in New Jersey, USA. Thus, I have a stable ping of around 100 on European servers including arena, 195, and others. I observed many European players have the same at 65.98.76.82:27888, Club Syndicate which is a New Jersey server. For this reason I had to add the p2ponly tag to my nick, because p2p allows me to play with pings around 100-150 ms with most European players having above average connections. Still this gives about a 4-5 frame delay which most players aren t used to when they play within EU. So they are unhappy if they can t score that brilliant goal (which I also love a lot, I watch the GOTM every month on forum) they can always score with the ping they are used to, and I am unhappy about that too when I see that. I d be happier than you if you could, because I don t believe ANY swos player would prefer to play with a higher ping, no one can play better with higher pings, it s ALWAYSvice versa. You may be more talented and far better than I am in SWOS so you may think high ping is to my advantage since you can t use your super powers, but it s not logical because if I m less talented with no or less superpowers I d keep doing worse as ping increases, and I doubt a bad ping is a good excuse when losing against a worse player. Because as I mentioned in item 1, swos is not just about being able to score that magnificent goal everytime, it s also about having a better strategy against your opponent, keeping in mind the conditions also, like what real players do when pitch is bad due to weather or whatever. Since I m cursed with high pings, I score that cheap goal more often which is not that much affected with lag, which is the evolution of my game style to online play. Still that lag, that happened right when you were about to score that beauty, stopped me from scoring my ugly also. So please keep in mind that when it s p2p, it s the same conditions for both sides, and it s as fair as it can be. If you can t deal with lag and delay, which will not only happen against me but with all guys with bad ping due to bad connection and also with good guys with good connection when the lines are busy due to millions downloading porn or surfing youtube and facebook, you should prefer offline tournaments where there is no such interruption, coz I m sure it s gonna take a while till internet connections reach the speed of light and are perfectly stable.

3- The F ing thing: I already talked about what I think about that in the other topic here so no need to mention again, but still wanted to add as an item because I believe respect and being kind, is far more important about any technical or tactical issues we can have in our lovely game. I understand the ego involved, and I know many players are here to satisfy it (or we wouldn t have leagues or rankings), just keep in mind it ll be better satisfied if you can keep calm while your opponent is going crazy after your win:D

Good luck everyone, have fun. May the SWOS be with you...

great argumentation Ejder. Don t tell me - you study law there in the US? :)

but in point 1 you re an advocate of the devil for me... what else should I play for apart from trying to score a nice goal?

real players play for cash (unfortunately sometimes only for it), swos players play for fun (that is what I believe in), scoring always the same goal kills the fun... I hope you get my point of view? of course you don t have to share it.

as for points 2 and 3 - you re absolutely right!

good luck with your games and - HAVE FUN :D

1. Why should you curve around the pitch when your opponent allows you to go straight?
(@ Xlea: The nicest goal is always the one which your opponent cannot defend. ;) )
SWOS leaves everybody the freedom to play like he wants. And if someone loves to blast the ball from 12 inches all the time then just let him. Sometimes people tend to think their fun or idea of SWOS is superior to anyone elses but it just isn t.
Maxime: Live...and let live.

2. It s just a game (which is sometimes forgotten by some people)
(And one s character is exposed at best while playing a game)
In case of Ejder-Z we should just be happy that it is possible at all to play against people from other continents, no matter how many frames are delayed.
And if you loose (not only in this case but always) take it with greatness and a healthy portion of humour.

3. Not a problem of SWOS but one of nowadays society.
(We re not gonna change anything)

4. In the last 3 (!!!) years we had only 10-15 people who got banned. This is a remarkable low number for a gaming community and a credit to all of us. We re a dying race, not only as gamers but also as a big group of gentle and like-minded people.

My opinion on the always debatable one way scorer thing. I personally don t like it. It s no fun for me to play like that, I would bore myself to death playing like a robot and trying to score the same goal over and over. And I would have stopped playing swos ages ago if I based my game style on scoring the same goal one after another. Of course there are some moves I try more often than others, but that s normal to everyone else. Also I don t like playing against one move players, sometimes I find myself smiling when I see they trying over and over the same move even if they see it s not working at all.
I know it s frustating to take 3 or 4 similar goals in one game, but if this happens to me I always blame myself because I couldn t stop them instead of complaining to my opponent that he should try other goals, even if I feel he should :)

Of course if anyone enjoys playing that style nothing against that, it s none of my business. And there s a bunch of one way scorers that are top players here and really hard to beat for anyone.
But I get my share of those on league games. For friendly sessions I prefer playing against players that play with a different style and like to try new moves.

Also I think swos is not only playing with top teams, playing leagues with weak teams like FLOTs is absolutely great and some of my best online (and offline too) moments were playing in those kind of competitions. Players that use same cheap goals over and over will do really bad with this teams has most of them simply won t work there. Good thing about playing with weak teams is that you need to find scoring alternatives and adapt your gamestyle a bit.

I think this is really an option that each one has to take, and no one else has anything to do with it. My only advice to everyone is to play the way you get more fun. For me playing swos = having fun. Of course that on important matches we all know it s not only that, but for the most part it is.

Regarding the p2p/kaillera thing this has been discussed a lot of times. I personally think p2p is superior to kaillera and it s a much more efficient protocol has I get much better pings and smoother gameplay with it than in normal servers almost everywhere. Like Playa said p2p also allows us to play with other continent players, I already played with a couple of brazilian guys without any lag even though the delays were noticeable with servers this wouldn t be possible has one of us would have really high pings making it unplayable. I can play against Ejder on US for example with p2p with very decent pings, so I believe this proves that p2p as a protocol is the better one.
But problem is that before p2p everyone was used to play on german servers and were used to it, so it s normal that players near those servers and that get really low pings there might be reluctant in moving to p2p and play with a bit higher pings. I think it s a matter of getting used to it, but some players don t feel they should as they don t need to. And It s their right as there s no rules about it. Now if only p2p appeared at the beginning of kaillera, story would be different...

Well i played 1000 of P2P games so i can say my experience:

1-2 skips delay - same like amiga offline feeling
3 skips - it is playable but you can feel some delay especially in defence
4 skips - much delay but there is still some SWOS feeling left
5 skips - this is not a SWOS game, it is better to toss a coin than play it. I would suggest only playing friendly games with this delay

Well...to tell the truth...when I play Ejder and he scores HIS goal, I m not angry about Ejder. I m angry about myself that I m still not used to that delay, so I can t manage to defend them...not yet ;D .

I m a real n00b when my connection is delayed, far away from my normal gamestyle. So I decided to play p2p as often as possible to get used to it and to have a chance in european competitions. I don t want to have such a match like vs Giggs in ISSF-Final again...that s for sure. And all players who are getting angry about a typical one way scorer should ask theirselves what it s all about for them to play SWOS. Feel free to defend this kind of goals. I really don t like it to hear Every time the same..hehe or something else. Keep it fair and write Everytime the same mistake in defence...hehe instead ;D

@ LIK: Online can never be like Offline...it s a huge difference IMO...doesn t matter how high your pings or frames are.

Ah and one thing. IMO a rule is needed for any kind of competition. What can be done if one player said he wants to play on server and the other one said No way...p2p or nothign like it happened with me and Giggs. I recognised that even players who are members for a long time (and who are used to play on servers) say they want to play p2p because the opponent has a better ping on server and they don t tolerate this. So even they have no advantage with p2p (same ping/delay) they want the player who is used to a low ping to have the same high one. Sorry, but there is no fairness for me. So...a rule please. A rule what makes it clear what should be done then :)

Its not a huge difference, it is a same game we are not playing chess on amiga
With 2 skips delay feeling is same if there is no lag

That s why I said IMO. I played a lot offline and always I recognize the absolutely no delay and have to play some matches to get used to it because I m more used to this small online delay (my opponents like Wänä will agree when u ask them, because they see how many shots I shoot anywhere else, but not on goal ;D). But I m sure I m not alone with that...

ok i am cool with that :)

And one more thing about server play.

2 skips on P2P is better than any ping on server.
Game works faster, more stable and it is same for both players which brings it very close to offline experience

@pallister: maybee admins could use my experience table to set p2p rules but it will be very hard because ejder for example can say lets play on USA server where he has ping 1 and yo over 100
